vegetarianism
Today i learnt a lot about vegetarians. I always knew they never eat meat but i learnt that some types of vegetarians eat eggs and dairy things while others don't eat anything that was produced from an animal.
Vegetariansim
List the different types of vegetarians and explain what food they can eat.
- Lacto -ovo-vegetarians (don't eat meat)
- Lacto-vegtarians (don't eat meat or eggs)
- Ovo-vegetarians ((don't eat meat, milk and dairy products)
- Vegans (don't eat meat, milk, eggs and any dairy products)
- Pollo-vegetarians (eat chicken, fish)
Provide reasons why people decide to become vegetarian.
- Religion
- Health
- Animal Welfare
- Enviromental issues
- Taste
Identify the trends associated with vegetariansim in Australia today.
Studies show that vegetarians tend to have a lower risk of developing such diseases as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and some cancers.
Outline the dietary-related diseases that are less prevalent for vegetarians.
- High blood pressure
- Lung cancer
- Anemia
- Diabetes
- Gallstones
What reasons are given for a vegetarian being considered to be healthier that a non-vegetarian.
Vegetarians are at lower risk to developing coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and some cancers. Also the fibres from the food develop a straonger heart.
How can vegetarians ensure they consume all of the essential amino acids? If you want a complete protein in one food, tofu is probably your best bet. However, since you're probably not going to want to eat that every day, the best thing to do is eat a variety of high protein foods. Mix your proteins in order to get complete proteins. So, have say a grain (quinoa, millet, or brain rice are good) and have it with beans, or tempeh, or seitan, or nuts, etc.
Why is it difficult for a vegetarian to obtain an adequate supply of iron? How can a vegetarian improve the absorption of iron in their diet?Dried beans and dark green leafy vegetables are especially good sources of iron, even better on a per calorie basis than meat. Iron absorption is increased markedly by eating foods containing vitamin C along with foods containing iron. Vegetarians do not have a higher incidence of iron deficiency than do meat eaters.
List the types of food from which a vegan can obtain calciumCalcium, needed for strong bones, is found in dark green leafy vegetables, tofu made with calcium sulfate, calcium-fortified soy milk and orange juice, and many other foods commonly eaten by vegans. Although lower animal protein intake may reduce calcium losses, there is currently not enough evidence to suggest that vegans have lower calcium needs. Vegans should eat foods that are high in calcium and/or use a calcium supplement.

Reflection
So far in theory we have been watching movies which relate to the kitchen. The movies were 'Safety in food handiling' and 'Avoid that hazard'. The first movie we watched was 'Safety in food handiling', in this film it talked about the precausions and what could occur with not cleaning hands before touching the foods your going to cook. It lso talked about how you must clean the equipment you use thoroughly so to not cause bacteria or any fungis to grow. The second film called 'Avoid that hazard' talked about making sure you put away appliences after they are used so you don't trip over them in the kitchen. It also made a precausion to not keep electrical appliences near water as it it dangerous and could electricute you. The things we've cooked in practical hospotality included cheese and chutney muffins, jaffa muffins and the rigatoni with chicken and sundried tomatoe pasta. They we're all very delicious and tasteful

Italy

Term Four
Assignments
This term we got given a task in which we had to choose a
country to learn and study about its food culture. Maritza and I were partners
and we chose Italy. We found out some amazing things about their food culture
and how they run stuff when it came to their foods. I believe choosing Italy
was a good decision we made because I’ve always wanted to know more about
Italians foods and cooking utensils. I now know a whole new knowledge about
Italia’s foods and what they don’t eat. We had an assignment in which we had to
find out things like their main ingredients in which they use their religion
influence, their cooking utensils and their main cookery methods. We got all
the information in which we needed to present our assignment to the class so
they had an understanding of Italian foods. I thought that our presentation
went well and we had the information which we needed to answer the questions
sufficiently.
Our second assignment which we did for this term was cooking
food from our chosen cultures. With this assignment we got paired up with
another couple so that we made our cultured food and they made their cultured
food. We got paired with Christie and Annaliese. Maritza and I decided to make
a BBQ meat lover pizza while Christie and Annaliese decided to make desserts
which included chocolate fudge and chocolate mousse. Our pizza was very easy to
cook; I started off with frying up 3 sausages while Maritza started with
cutting up the onion and the tomatoes. After I was finished with the sausages I
fried up the little bits of bacon while Maritza started to put all the other
ingredients onto the two pizzas. When I finished with the bacon and placed that
on the two pizzas, we tossed some cheese on both of them and shoved them in the
oven to bake for 12-15 minutes. While this time passed we cleaned up all the
utensils we used and put them all back into their cabinets.
I think our end result turned out how I planned and looked
very delicious.
